Vivian Clement
At the age of 12, Vivian Clement picked up her father’s guitar – it was love at first sight. Within a short period of time she was playing guitar and singing harmonies in her local church choir. Just a few years later, Vivian was performing for corporate events and bars in her hometown in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
“As a child, I really enjoyed drawing and painting. At seventeen, I won a summer scholarship to study art at the Ontario Art Gallery, in Toronto. I had already been playing guitar for several years and wasn’t sure if I should become an artist or a musician. Once I finished my scholarship, I realized that I had more of a passion for music, so I decided to make a career as a guitarist.”
Vivian moved to Toronto to study jazz guitar at Humber College with Peter Harris. She also took private vocal lessons with pop/classical teacher Helen Knight.
“I spent a considerable amount of time in high school songwriting. “When I was 18, it was discovered that I had nodules on my vocal cords. It wasn’t from singing so much but from speaking from my throat. I worked with a speech therapist for a year where I learned to speak properly. Once I moved to Toronto, I also studied with Helen Knight who was instrumental in keeping my voice in shape.”
After completing her studies, she opened up Exodus Studios with her husband/producer Anthony Paiano, and spent several years as a session musician for local songwriters and artists.
For over 15 years, Clement has been performing as a jazz/blues guitarist in the Toronto area. She also worked for Disney Cruise Lines as a featured artist.
“I had been gigging in the bars in Toronto and recording in the studio full time. A drummer friend of ours told us there was an opportunity to work for Disney Cruise Lines. I was really itching to travel but was too busy performing to even take time off. Working for Disney provided a great opportunity to get the best of both worlds.”
During the summer months, Vivian performs at jazz/blues festivals with her quartet and does TV appearances promoting her original CD’s. She has recently completed her 2nd CD (EP) and is in the process of writing for a 3rd CD.
“As a songwriter, I always felt compelled to write books.”
