Nikki O’Neill: My Rendition of Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s Solo on “Up Above My Head”

This is my tribute to the great Sister Rosetta Tharpe... I transcribed her solo that she played on “Up Above My Head.” I’m playing it in standard tuning, while she did it in an alternate tuning. She also played it in a blazingly fast tempo, but I chose to slow it down here, because I want to show you the amazing (probably improvised) licks that she played.
She was so ahead of her time — a rock ‘n’ roll pioneer, who incorporated jazz phrasing into her playing (with all those cool chromatic lines). Clearly she knew her way around a guitar, could sing her heart out, and had the showmanship and swagger that you need for rock ‘n’ roll! She inspired Aretha and Elvis, and was way ahead of Clapton/Hendrix/Page and probably even Muddy.
