Yvette Young: Tone Crafting with Covet Guitarist

n this video, Yvette Young details three textural guitar landscapes that inspired songs on catharsis [Triple Crown], the 2023 album by Covet—her self-titled “emotional nerd rock” band. Creating the three tones showcased on “Firebird,” “Coronal” and “Vanquish” required an almost painterly approach to sound, a rethink of dynamics and a fair amount of guitar pedals.

“When I first started playing guitar, I felt I had something to prove,” says musical innovator Yvette Young. “I thought I needed to play something technical to get people’s attention and respect. But as I’ve matured into my voice, I’ve found I’m truly passionate about sounds, colors and textures in the context of songwriting and production. A lot of my guitar playing ended up chilling out, because I didn’t feel the need to fill up all that space anymore.”

Sharing her tone tactics with effects and pedals, Young explains: “A guitar tone is obviously beautiful, but one of the most exciting things to come out of new guitar playing is experimental sounds. That’s what I’ve been all about recently. I like to play with pedals to make a guitar not sound like a guitar. I want something surprising to happen so that people’s ears light up. For me, a sign I’ve dialed in a really special guitar tone is when I can’t get away from that sound. It makes me want to continue playing and I feel inspired to write more.”
